Custom-Made Figurines: Preview, Changes and Important Questions

Digital preview and finished custom 3D figurine on a worktable

A custom photo figurine is made for an individual order. Before purchasing, it helps to clarify which photos are needed, how to submit personal requests and whether the process includes a preview or correction step. It is also important to read the withdrawal and return information for the exact product. General explanations do not replace the shop’s current terms or withdrawal notice.

What to clarify before ordering

Start with the product page. Which photos should you upload? Which style, size or material options can you select? Can you add notes about pose or defining features? Keep requests concise and rank the most important details. This helps you understand what information the maker will use.

Check whether a draft, preview or approval step is offered and how it works. A preview is not automatically included with every custom order. If the page is unclear, ask before ordering whether a revision step is included, when it happens and how many changes are possible.

Understand previews and revision requests

A preview may show one stage of the design. It does not automatically guarantee that every requested change can be made or that the finished item will match every detail on screen. Clarify what the preview covers: pose, colors, clothing or the overall subject. Ask whether revisions are possible before or after production begins and whether extra costs may apply.

When giving feedback, be specific. “Please make the glasses more visible” is clearer than “Please make it look more like them.” Focus on the main differences and refer to a photo where possible. The exact process depends on the terms actually offered for the product.

What does German law say about personalized goods?

Distance contracts generally have a statutory right of withdrawal. However, section 312g(2)(1) of the German Civil Code (BGB) provides an exception for goods that are not prefabricated and whose production depends on an individual choice or specification by the consumer, or that are clearly tailored to personal needs. Whether that exception applies to a specific order depends on the circumstances and how the product is configured. A photo figurine may fall within this category, but this general information does not assess an individual case.

Before buying, read the shop’s current withdrawal notice and information about personalized goods. A voluntary store return or satisfaction policy is different from a statutory right of withdrawal. Questions about defects or an item that differs from the order also need to be considered separately.

For cross-border consumer contracts, factors such as the consumer’s habitual residence, whether the trader directs activities to that country and any choice of law may matter. Article 6 of the EU Rome I Regulation sets rules for certain consumer contracts. The applicable law cannot be determined from a shop’s language or domain alone.

Official legislation: section 312g BGB, section 355 BGB and Article 6 of the Rome I Regulation. If you are unsure about your specific rights, seek independent advice.

Useful questions to ask the seller

  • Which photos and details are required for the option I want?
  • Does this product include a preview or approval step?
  • What changes are possible, at what stage and under which terms?
  • How do the current shop terms treat custom orders and returns?
  • Where can I read the applicable withdrawal notice and information about defects?

Prepare the order step by step

  1. Choose the product option and read its full description.
  2. Gather clear photos and note the most important features.
  3. Ask about previews, revisions and process details before purchasing.
  4. Keep the order confirmation and messages about the agreed design.
  5. Review the withdrawal notice, store policies and custom-product information.

Clear information helps you order with confidence

Clear communication helps set realistic expectations for a custom item. Ask about previews and revisions if the process is not explained, and read the withdrawal information that applies to your purchase. That way, you understand the steps and conditions before placing the order.
